What People Say in Silence

They both sat across from each other, the silence was stretching longer than usual. My brother felt something was off. Her words were few, her fingers fidgeted with the hem of her dress and her foot tapped lightly against the floor.

When he reached for her hand, she hesitated before offering a weak smile. He asked if she was okay. She said she was fine, but everything about her body screamed otherwise.

They ended their date, leaving with silent and unspoken messages. Most of what we communicate isn’t spoken, it’s felt. Studies show that 70-93% of communication is non-verbal, meaning that what people don’t say is often more important than what they do.

A smirk can reveal hidden amusement, a clenched jaw can expose frustration, and prolonged eye contact can carry a thousand unspoken words. Yet, many people rely solely on words, missing the silent conversations happening right before their eyes.

Understanding non-verbal cues is not just a skill—it’s emotional intelligence in action. Body language is a window into a person’s emotions. When someone crosses their arms, they may be defensive or closed off.

When they lean in, they’re engaged. Subtle micro-expressions, like a fleeting look of sadness before a forced smile can reveal what words try to conceal.

A firm handshake exudes confidence, while a weak grip suggests hesitation. Eye movements tell their own stories; looking down often signals discomfort, while darting eyes may hint at deception or anxiety.

But reading non-verbal cues isn’t just about analysing others, it’s also about being aware of your own. Ever wondered why people seem to pull away when you’re speaking?

Maybe your tone is too sharp, or your arms are always crossed, creating a barrier. Maybe your lack of eye contact makes you seem disinterested, even when you’re fully engaged. Your body speaks before your mouth does, so what is it saying?

Decoding non-verbal communication isn’t about mind-reading, it’s about awareness. It’s about recognising when a friend says “I’m good” but their posture says they’re drowning.

It’s about sensing when a partner’s touch has lost warmth, even when their words remain the same. It’s about knowing when to press for honesty and when to simply sit in silence, letting your presence say, I see you.

In a world where words can be misleading, body language is the truth that cannot be faked. If you listen closely, not with your ears, but with your eyes, you’ll hear everything people don’t say.
