Who Are You Following?
There’s a popular saying in pidgin: ‘Follow who know road.’ People often say it with such humour but that statement is truly profound. It is apt that regardless of the journey you are embarking on, you need to walk with someone who’s been there before. Someone who’s seen the pitfalls learned the shortcuts and can help you navigate the twists and turns. In other words, you need a suitable mentor.
Imagine travelling to a new destination without a map or GPS. How likely are you to get lost? That’s what it’s like trying to figure out life or chase your dreams without guidance.
A good mentor is your human GPS. They’ve been where you’re trying to go, made the mistakes, and learned the lessons. They help you avoid unnecessary detours to get to your destination faster. Trying to do it all on your own may seem noble, but it’s not wise. Even the most successful people have mentors.
Unfortunately, not everyone who claims to ’know the road’ is also fit to lead you. Some people are experienced without integrity or values. A mentor must be someone who isn’t only older or more experienced, but someone whose life and values align with where you’re trying to go.
To identify a suitable mentor, first, find out if their expertise match your aspirations. No matter how luxurious a car is, it’s can never be driven on sea. Similarly, no matter how musically gifted you are, you cannot be mentored by a cook.
If you are looking forward to starting a business then your mentor should be an entrepreneur and if you seeking spiritual growth, then you ought to look for someone rooted in the faith.
Secondly does the mentor have a proven track record? Look, anyone can talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? I encourage you to look for someone whose life reflects the success you’re aiming for.
Additionally, look out for the person’s willingness to share. There is no good mentor who is stingy with knowledge. They’re open and willing to pour into you.
Finally, look for a mentor with integrity. It is not just about skills, it is about integrity. You don’t want to follow someone who’ll lead you astray morally or ethically.
As the Bible says in Amos 3:3: “Can two walk together unless they are agreed?” The person you follow will influence not just your direction, but also your character so choose who you can yoke with.
To find a suitable mentor you have to also intentionally seek them out. You can begin with your immediate circle. Is there someone whose life or career you admire? Someone who inspires you?
Another way is to attend conferences, join professional groups, or even volunteer. These spaces are goldmines for connecting with potential mentors.
You can equally leverage technology. Platforms like LinkedIn are great for reaching out to experts in your field. A respectful message expressing your admiration and request for guidance can go a long way.
Kindly take note, that not all mentors are formal. Sometimes, mentorship happens through books, podcasts, or online resources. If you can’t sit across the table from them, learn from their content.
So, I’ll ask again, who are you following? Are they leading you closer to your purpose, or pulling you away from it? In life, who you follow matters. The right mentor can turn a vague dream into a clear vision, providing the tools, encouragement, and perspective you need to succeed.
Therefore, choose wisely, for the road you take isn’t just about the destination, it’s about the journey and the lessons along the way. Make sure to follow a mentor who truly knows the way. And when you find that guide, walk with humility, gratitude, and purpose.
Your future self will thank you.
