Why Intentions Matter

Have you ever been in a situation where someone did something seemingly kind, only to realise later that it wasn’t as genuine as you thought?

Maybe a friend gave you an advice that felt supportive at the time, but you later discovered they had an ulterior motive. Or perhaps you went out of your way to help someone, but they misunderstood your intention, leaving you feeling unappreciated.

Intentions are the unseen force behind every action, yet, they are often overlooked, misunderstood, or disguised. An intention is the reason behind the things we do. Thus, it’s not just what we do but why we do it.

Two people can do the same thing, yet the meaning and impact can be completely different based on what’s driving them. A simple compliment can be heartfelt or manipulative. A generous act can be out of love or a calculated move for personal gain. Therefore, intentions must matter more than we often acknowledge, because they shape the authenticity of our words and actions.

It has been discovered that people are more likely to trust and connect with those whose intentions they perceive as genuine, even more than those who are simply competent. In other words, people care why you do something more than what you do.

This is why someone can sense when an apology is insincere or why a seemingly generous act can feel off when the giver expects something in return. Humans are wired to detect the difference between authenticity and pretence, even if it takes time.

Sincerely, I believe that sometimes, we also struggle with our intentions. There are days that you have done something nice just to be noticed or given a gift with an unspoken expectation attached or even stayed in a friendship just for convenience sake and not because of love.

It’s uncomfortable to admit, but recognising your motives is just as important as discerning those of others. The danger lies in ignoring them because when you do, you risk living a life of hidden agendas, unfulfilled expectations, and misplaced trust.

So intentions are exceptionally important, therefore, we need to pay more attention to the words and actions of those around us but also, to our intentions; we need to be brutally honest about them. Else we risk losing it all in the end.
