Why Poverty Will Never End

“The poor you will always have.” This statement sounds truly unfair. Even perhaps harsh. Why can’t the poor be no more? Why must inequality keep breathing in our world?
If we’re honest, these words force us to face a painful reality, the world we live in is broken, and no system, no matter how well-crafted, can fix it entirely, not yet.
But this is not an excuse to do nothing. If anything, it’s a call to step into a deeper kind of responsibility. Equity is not about making everyone identical. It’s about making sure those who start far behind get the help they need to have a fair shot.
Think of life as a race where some start metres from the finish line and others start in a ditch. Equality would give everyone the same pair of running shoes. Equity would first pull the ones in the ditch out, clean them up, and then give them shoes.
Unfortunately, no matter how hard we push for fairness, the world has cracks. Poverty isn’t only about money; it’s about access, opportunity, mindset, and sometimes, the invisible chains of history and systems.
Even when one person escapes poverty, another might fall into it. We can’t erase poverty right now, but we can choose how we respond to it in our daily lives. That choice is what separates indifference from compassion, and charity from justice.
The truth is, some of us live in bubbles. We scroll past hunger, drive past slums, and sip coffee without realising the story behind the hands that picked the beans.
Equity forces us to pop that bubble. It says: look, listen, and act. It’s about asking, What can I shift today so someone else gets a fairer shot tomorrow? It’s not always about giving money. Sometimes, equity is mentoring a young hustler, opening a door to someone without connections, or speaking up when bias shuts someone out.
And yes, equity in a broken world can feel like pouring water into a leaking bucket. You help one, and ten more need help. But here’s the revelation; the point isn’t to fix the whole world alone. The point is to be faithful with the part of the world you can reach.
The poor will always be here, which means the opportunity to be just, compassionate, and generous will always be here too. The measure of our humanity isn’t in how much we keep, but in how much we care.
You may think, you are not rich enough to help. But you don’t need excess to make an impact. You just need intention. A conversation that restores dignity. A connection that leads to opportunity. A skill shared freely. The fight for equity is built on small, consistent acts done by ordinary people with extraordinary hearts.
So maybe the poor will always be here. But so will we. And if we live with eyes wide open and hands ready to move, the brokenness of the world will never have the last word. Equity won’t erase poverty yet, but it can rewrite the story for someone today, and that might just be enough for now.
