Don’t Make A Mess of the Gift

There is something humbling about the Cross. It levels every man. It silences the loud, and it lifts the broken. At the Cross, there is no rich or poor, no educated or unlearned, no colour, no class, no tribe.

The same blood was shed for the thief as for the priest. The same mercy was poured out for the prostitute as for the prophet. At the Cross, every man kneels equal, no advantage, no bias, no superior ground.

But the journey does not end there. Because after the Cross, there is a Crown. And with the Crown comes equity. The King does not treat all servants the same way. He gives according to their labour, their faithfulness, their journey.

Heaven rewards differently. To some, a city. To others, ten cities. To another, a crown of life. The Cross is the place of equality, but the Crown is the place of equity. And this shows us a divine principle: mercy is free for all, but reward is measured.

Think about life. We may all start a race at the same line, but we do not all finish at the same time. Opportunities differ, efforts differ, sacrifices differ. Equality is needed for access, but equity is needed for fairness.

A teacher may give every student the same exam sheet (equality), but the grades will reflect effort and discipline (equity). Life itself teaches us this balance: everyone deserves a chance, but not everyone deserves the same outcome.

This truth is both sobering and liberating. Sobering, because you cannot hide behind equality forever. You cannot say, “God loves us all the same” and stop there. Yes, He does, but love does not erase responsibility.

The measure of your faith, your diligence, and your obedience, will still be weighed. Liberating, because you don’t need to compete with anyone else. The crown you receive is not stolen from another’s head. It is yours; tailored, earned, and fitted by grace and works combined.

When you look at society, you see the tension play out every day. Two people may be given the same job opportunity. One squanders it, the other multiplies it. Equality gave them the same chance.

Equity gives them different rewards. In relationships, in business, even in faith, we cannot live only by equality. We must embrace equity, because fairness is not giving everyone the same, but giving each what is right.

The Cross reminds us that no one is too far gone to be saved. The Crown reminds us that no one is too casual to be rewarded. Together they teach balance. Together they teach that grace gives you access, but responsibility defines your reward. You are equal in mercy, but you are distinct in fruit.

So ask yourself, if the Cross has made you equal, what will the Crown reveal about you? Are you living for applause, or for eternal reward? The Cross opened the door for all, but the Crown will weigh what you did with the open door
