Inspiring Change Every Day with Grace
The Last Shall be First

In the order of men, life rewards speed, position, and power. But the Kingdom of God has always told a different story: “The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.” That statement is a radical reordering of how true greatness works.
When Jesus said those words, He wasn’t trying to confuse people. He was exposing the fragile foundation of human ambition. Human order requires us to push forward without getting left behind. Like, outshine everyone else.
Contrarily, Kingdom order demands you to slow down. It emphasises humility. In the kingdom of God, service is greater than status. It feels almost upside down, but maybe what looks like losing in the eyes of men is winning in the eyes of God.
Think about it, how many times have we seen the proud fall from grace? The celebrity who had everything but lost it all. We all love to rise, but not all rises are equal. Human order rises fast, like fireworks; bright, loud, but gone in seconds.
Kingdom order rises slow, like the sun; steady, patient and undeniable. When you look closely, you realize God does not rush. He shapes, prunes and refines. That is why the one who seems to be last today may actually be first tomorrow. Life is not a sprint to the finish line; it is a test of endurance, character, and heart.
There is also something liberating about this truth. You don’t have to compare your pace to someone else’s. You don’t have to feel like a failure because your friend bought a car before you, or because someone married earlier, or because others are already in the spotlight.
Human order pressures you to prove yourself. Kingdom order frees you to trust the process. What looks like delay is often preparation. What looks like a setback is often a setup. The last is not forgotten, it is simply being positioned.
But in reality, it may hurts to be last. It may hurts to watch others shine while you wait. This is why Jesus’ words cut deep. He reminds us that being last is not a curse when God is in the picture.
Sometimes last means hidden, and hidden seasons protect us from pride, mistakes, and premature exposure. The spotlight can blind if you step into it too early. So yes, it stings to be overlooked. But sometimes, the back of the line is the safest place for God to prepare a crown.
So, why might the first be last? Because God is not impressed by speed but by faithfulness. He is not moved by titles but by hearts. Human order will celebrate who got there first. Kingdom order will reveal who stayed true to the end. And at the end of the day, that’s what really matters.
