Close But Faraway

It is something strange how people can sit so close to power and still never rise. How can someone grow up in a good home, surrounded by opportunities, even sit in the rooms of the great, and still crash hard? It baffles the mind. But it’s real.

Being near greatness doesn’t guarantee transformation. That’s not how change works. Change is not contagious, it’s a decision; a personal choice, and not everyone makes it.

You can serve the president and still die poor. You can live in church and still walk in darkness. You can date someone full of purpose and still waste your own life.

What you’re close to doesn’t change you. What you choose does. The Bible talks about Judas, one of the twelve who walked with Jesus, saw miracles, and heard the Word straight from the mouth of God. And yet, he betrayed Him. Why? Because transformation is never automatic, it’s intentional. It’s a hard decision.

The mistake most people make is assuming that exposure is enough. That by being around successful people, or spiritual people, something will rub off. That somehow, life will change by osmosis.

But truth be told, you can be exposed and never expand. You can be around power and remain powerless. Because exposure only reveals what’s possible, it doesn’t replace responsibility. Growth is always a matter of personal will.

And here’s the thing, opportunity doesn’t transform people, choices do. That’s why two people can attend the same conference, read the same book, hear the same advice, and walk out with different lives.

One applies it, the other shrugs it off. One chooses discipline, the other chooses distraction. That’s the quiet power of decision. It shapes destinies more than any mentor, miracle, or moment.

Even the people you admire most today, the ones who inspire you, weren’t born transformed. They made choices; to wake up early, to keep going when it hurt, to learn when it was easier to scroll. To heal when it was easier to hate. The truth is, greatness doesn’t transfer by touch. It transfers by action. The only way to grow is to choose it daily, quietly and deliberately.

If you’re reading this and you’re waiting for life to change because you’re close to someone who’s making moves, pause. That’s not how it works. You can ride in the same car, eat at the same table, be on the same team and still end up nowhere.

Until your choices match your dreams, nothing moves. Your future is not based on who you know. It’s based on what you do with what you know.

So, what are you choosing today? Mediocrity or mastery? Laziness or legacy? Every day we choose, whether we know it or not. The most dangerous thing in life is to be close to purpose and still miss it. It happens every day. Don’t let it be you.
