Inspiring Change Every Day with Grace
Was It God?

There are moments in life when things go terribly wrong in life, and you are left wondering is this intentional or accidental? Is this God redirecting me, or did I just mess up?
That question stings, yet it’s an important one. Because the line between divine detours and human mistakes is often thin, too thin for comfort.
Sometimes, we call something a lesson when it was just a lack of preparation. We say everything happens for a reason, but deep down, we wonder if that reason was our own poor choice.
The truth is, not all detours are divine. Some are self-made by impatience, pride, fear, or even by ignoring clear red flags. David, in the Bible, chose to number Israel against God’s warning. That wasn’t redirection, that was rebellion. And the consequence came. Choices have weight.
But here’s the other side. God is a Redeemer, even when we make the wrong turn, He doesn’t abandon the car. He gets in and recalculates the route. That’s where grace comes in.
What should’ve wrecked us becomes a window. A closed door becomes a compass. Joseph’s pit wasn’t because he sinned, it was preparation for a palace. That’s divine detour; pain with purpose and delay with direction.
So, how do you tell the difference? Sometimes it’s in the fruit. If a setback draws you closer to God, humbles you and deepens your perspective, it might be redirection.
If it leaves you empty, bitter, restless, and stuck, it may be time to check your choices. God doesn’t confuse; He convicts. But choices come with consequences. And when we ignore wisdom or discernment, we can’t blame God for every crash.
You can be anointed and still make foolish decisions. Saul was chosen, yet his disobedience cost him his crown. Samson had strength, but played with the wrong fire. Talent doesn’t protect you from consequences. God can forgive, but not always undo. That’s why wisdom matters. That’s why we must stop confusing our voice with God’s voice. Not every open door is His doing.
But here’s the hope: God never wastes pain. If we’re honest enough to own our missteps, humble enough to learn, and open enough to grow, He can turn even our detours into destinations, but that takes reflection.
It takes courage and it takes asking hard questions, because not everything that feels like a setback is punishment, and not everything that feels spiritual is right. Discernment is key.
At the end of the day, life is a sum of our choices—and God’s sovereignty. Both work together. You don’t always get to choose what happens, but you always get to choose your next response. And sometimes, the greatest breakthroughs come when we finally admit, That was me, not God or the devil. That’s when real redirection begins. Not in the heavens, but in the heart.
