Are You In Control?

Life runs on different types of control, and understanding them may be the only way to stop feeling like you’re always drowning in chaos. Sometimes, you’re the one holding the reins. Other times, someone else is pulling the strings. And then, there are moments when control seems like a wild storm, far beyond anyone’s reach.

There is the control you have over yourself. This is where it all begins. Your thoughts, your choices, your reactions, these are the things no one can fully take from you. When you master this, you stop being a puppet of impulse and start being the driver of your own destiny.

Then there’s the control others have over you. It’s subtle and sometimes brutal. Parents, bosses, lovers, even strangers, people can shape your behaviour with expectations, demands, and even manipulation.

Sometimes it’s good, like a mentor guiding you. Other times, it’s toxic, like a partner gaslighting you. Recognising this kind of control doesn’t mean cutting everyone off, but it means waking up to the fact that not everyone deserves the right to steer your ship.

And we cannot forget external control, the forces of life we simply cannot command. The weather, the economy, accidents, illness, sudden losses. These remind us that no matter how much we plan, life remains unpredictable. And here lies the paradox: the more you fight uncontrollable things, the more powerless you feel. But when you accept them and focus instead on what can be changed, you find freedom in surrender.

There’s also a darker type of control: the control you try to have over others. Many fall into this trap, trying to dictate people’s choices, emotions, and even their lives. This kind of control is often rooted in fear and insecurity. But it’s a losing game.

No one thrives under the weight of another’s grip. Real love, real friendship, real leadership, they don’t come from control, but from influence, respect, and trust.

Finally, there’s divine control, something higher than us all. For some, it’s God. For others, it’s fate or the universe. Call it what you may, but life proves again and again that there is a wisdom that moves beyond human calculation.

Sometimes, the things you couldn’t control become the very things that save you. The job you lost that led to a bigger opportunity. The relationship that ended so you could finally discover yourself. The delays that later made sense.

When you step back and look at all these types of control, you realise that balance is the key. Control what you can. Guard your space against unhealthy control from others.

Release the fight against things beyond your grasp. And above all, trust that some invisible hands are weaving a bigger story than you can see. Because the moment you stop obsessing over control, you actually gain it.
