Can You Trust Their Intentions?

Some people don’t come into your life to stay. They come to study, benefit, and leave. And sadly, they often come dressed in charm and with the right words.

That’s why learning to sense what lies beneath someone’s words or actions is no longer just a skill; but an emotional survival. It is what helps you protect your heart without building walls too high for real love and friendship to climb.

Sometimes, the people who clap loudest for you in public have already rehearsed their betrayal in private. It’s a painful lesson that many have had to learn the hard way. From romantic partners who were only in it for the thrill, to friends who disappeared the moment the spotlight dimmed, we’ve all had our fair share of disillusionment.

But there is a way to tell who really means well and who’s just passing time. A classic red flag is when someone’s effort peaks when they need you, and then vanishes when you need them.

Real intentions are patient. They’re not rushed. They allow room for mutual growth, awkward silences, and honest conversations. People with sincere intentions don’t need to perform. They don’t fear boundaries. They respect them.

In contrast, when someone constantly pushes to control the pace, asks too many personal questions too soon, or gets upset when you express discomfort, it’s time to pause and assess what they’re after.

Trust is often earned in the small things, how someone reacts when you’re vulnerable, how they treat those who can’t give them anything, how they speak of others when they’re not around. These are the moments that reveal character. So kindly pay attention to the patterns, and not the promises they make.

It’s easy to be swept off your feet by grand gestures. But emotional intelligence teaches us that consistency beats charisma. Someone can plan a perfect date but still lack the emotional maturity to be present in your hard times. The way people behave when there’s no benefit involved reveals far more than any romantic or friendly display ever could.

To navigate life with clarity, we must slow down and listen, listen not just with our ears, but with our intuition. Let your peace be the compass. If something feels off, it probably is.

The more we grow in emotional awareness, the easier it becomes to separate sincerity from performance. While we can’t always avoid heartbreak or disappointment, we can reduce the risk by staying alert, asking the right questions, and being brave enough to walk away when the energy feels transactional.
