Is It A Routine or a Genuine Relationship?

There’s a desire, a hunger in man to feel seen, heard, and deeply known by a deity, or for most people by God. Yet in chasing that desire, some have unknowingly traded authenticity for appearances and devotion for duty. So, instead of a thriving relationship, what exists now is a routine, tightly bound by religion, yet far from the heart of God.

It’s easy to confuse activity with intimacy. You serve in church, lead prayers, maybe even have a Bible app streak going. But deep within, you sometimes wonder, do I really know Him, or do I just know how to act like I do?

The truth is, God isn’t after performance. He’s not impressed by showmanship, well-packaged spirituality, or spiritual gymnastics. What captures His heart is purity of intention; a heart that seeks Him simply because He is God, not because of what we want from Him.

Most people approach God with a to-do list, hoping He checks off a few miracles in return for our devotion. But pure intentions strip all that away. Pure intentions proclaim that, “Even if God doesn’t do it, you will still choose Him.” That kind of love mirrors relationship, not religion.

Religion is obsessed with appearances, the right words, the perfect attendance, the flawless methodical stage acts, and the ticking of spiritual boxes. Relationship, on the other hand, leans into vulnerability.

It welcomes the mess, the questions, and the silence, and still believes that God is present. It’s in the late-night tears, the honest confessions, and the small whispered ‘help me’ prayers when no one is watching. It’s the kind of walk that doesn’t need a stage, only a surrendered heart.

It begins in the quiet, when you wake up and whisper a thank you before reaching for your phone, when you read the Bible not because you have to, but because you’re searching for Him.

It deepens in the choices, forgiving when it’s hard, obeying when it’s inconvenient, trusting when it makes no sense. You don’t have to be perfect to walk with God, you just have to be real.

Thankfully, the status quo is being redefined. Young people are walking away from performative faith and leaning into connection. However, there are still people who feel stuck, burnt out by religion, distant from a God they once felt close to.

The shift begins with intention. Are you doing this to know Him or to be seen and known by others? The answer will expose whether you’re in a relationship or just going through the motions.

The beauty of God is that He doesn’t shame those who realise they’ve missed it. He invites them back always. You can begin again, today. Without filters, without fancy words. Just you and Him.

He never wanted the version of you that’s “put together.” He wanted the real you, the one with questions, fears, doubts, and all.

So maybe, now is te time to start a new intentional relationship with God!
