He was fine. That is often how the story begins—until suddenly, he isn’t. We have become strangely comfortable with the phrase “I’m fine,” sometimes using it to describe a body we have not listened to, a mind we have exhausted, or a life we have been pushing far beyond its limits.
Recently, a man attended a conference and appeared completely well throughout the programme. He participated, interacted with people, and gave no obvious reason for anyone to worry.
When the conference ended, everyone boarded the bus to leave the hotel. Everyone except him. His calls went unanswered. His door remained locked. Eventually, they obtained an extra key and entered the room. He was there, lifeless.
No dramatic announcement signalled that something was wrong. No final conversation, no obvious warning that those around him could recognise—just a man who, to everyone else, had seemed fine.
The absence of a complaint is not the same thing as the presence of good health. We often wait for pain to become unbearable before we take it seriously. We wait until exhaustion affects our work, until persistent symptoms interfere with daily life, until emotional distress becomes impossible to conceal, or until somebody else notices that we have changed.
True wealth is not simply having enough money to buy what you want. It is having the health and capacity to experience what you have worked for.
You don’t have to say “You are fine,” when you’re not or when what you really mean is that you are managing.
Those are not always the same thing. Managing can mean carrying on while something quietly deteriorates. And sometimes the wisest investment you can make is to notice the signal while it is still a whisper, rather than waiting for your body to turn into a scream.
Tomorrow is a mystery, and help or calamity is seconds away. Don’t pretend all is well when you’re truly crying for help within. Reach out and someone will hold you by the hand.
