What Did It Cost You?

It is strange how quickly our definition of important changes when our health fails. Then, everything that kept us awake and going for more suddenly becomes negotiable or pushed to the waitlist.

Why do some behave this way? Is it because health is easy to ignore when it is working or because nothing appears to be wrong, we assume everything will remain that way?

Someone once said; “Everything is super important until you are sick. Then you realise there was only ever one thing that was important—your health.” Nothing matters more, because everything else is useless if we can’t enjoy them.

I believe, there is a difference between making a temporary sacrifice for a meaningful goal and building a lifestyle that continually sacrifices the person pursuing that goal. A sacrifice should have a purpose, a boundary and, eventually, a point of recovery. Otherwise, what begins as ambition can quietly become self-neglect.

However, you don’t need to neglect yourself in the name of success. The more successful we become, the more responsibilities can arrive. More money can bring more commitments. A promotion can bring longer hours. A growing business can demand constant attention. Recognition can create pressure to maintain an image.

Even success itself can become addictive because every achievement raises the standard for the next one. Before long, you may no longer be pursuing success because you value what it enables; you are pursuing it because you are afraid of becoming less successful.

That is where it becomes dangerous. If you need another achievement to feel worthy, another amount of money to feel secure, or another person’s approval to feel significant, there will always be a finish line moving farther away. You can spend your healthiest years preparing for a future that you may reach exhausted, emotionally distant and physically depleted. What would be the wisdom in gaining a life you no longer have the capacity to enjoy?

True wealth therefore requires you to think differently about what you are building. Your health is not separate from your success. Your sleep is part of your productivity. Your relationships are part of your wellbeing. Your emotional stability affects your decisions. Your mental clarity affects your work. Your physical strength affects what you can contribute.

You do not want to arrive at the future with impressive evidence of what you achieved and very little evidence that you actually lived. Let your success serve your life, not quietly consume it. Earn money without allowing money to dictate your worth. Pursue excellence without worshipping achievement and be ambitious without becoming unavailable to yourself and the people you love.

Because one day, many of the things you consider urgent today will become memories. So whenever success demands that you spend your health, time and energy recklessly, remember that some costs cannot be refunded.
